Stanley Walter Galli Died peacefully at home in Kentfield April 25, 2009 at age 97. Stan was a prominent and highly regarded illustrator who was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1981. He was born January 18, 1912 in San Francisco to Laura and Ismene Galli. He attended the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) and the Art Center School in Los Angeles. His illustration career began in the late 1930's in San Francisco. After the war, he returned to his previous employer, Patterson and Hall, for a few years then decided to work freelance. Beginning in 1952, he embarked on a long-term relationship illustrating for the Saturday Evening Post. At the same time, he began a highly successful effort developing the tree farming series for Weyerhauser Company. These efforts continued for a number of years along with assignments from McCall's, Ladies Home Journal, Today's Woman, Readers Digest, and True magazine. He also designed dozens of postage stamps. In 1968, he transitioned from illustration to painting, producing much work dealing with his interpretation of ancient Italy and with the early Spanish colonial period in California. He shared his time between the residence in Kentfield and a 16th century farmhouse in the Tuscan Hills from 1968 to 1995. He is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Frances; sons Timothy (Barbara) and Thomas; grandchildren Laura Galli, Marco Galli, and Antonio Galli (Maria); niece Christine Rodrigues; and cousin Eva Ceccotti. He was predeceased by his sisters Irene Biggio and Lorraine Rogers.
